Write for you, write the story you want to write. Enjoy the journey. And when you run into obstacles, remember who you’re doing this for, and keep at it.

I let my mind take a break from the project and work on something else. I would bake, watch a movie, read a book, or write another project. Then after a while an idea for the next scene hits me and I get back to it.

The unlimited number of children you can have. To be able to create a hero, a strong female lead, a whole race of magical beings and build a world for them to save. Anything is possible, you just have to translate them into a story.

I am currently editing an adult fantasy novel, which is sourced from my husband’s encounters with unseen creatures of myth and his take on the urban legends from the Philippines. While I envisioned The Scientist King as a live action film, this project would probably be best interpreted as an animated film or a kdrama.

I find inspiration everywhere. Elements of the novel, The Scientist King, were inspired by photos of the northern lights, a high school biology lecture on virus infection, local Filipino myths about engkantos, and projects in predictive data science. I wrote another story (that may be published in the future) in the same world as The Scientist King after being wowed by a glass sculpture by the artist, Chihuly. You have to be open to the spark of inspiration wherever you are, whatever you’re doing.

The Scientist King’s artificial intelligence was inspired by the one in the tv show, Person of Interest. The book’s AI also gathers data from video surveillance plus literature, news archives, and everything that’s online to come up with recommendations to guide its commune leaders. In Person of Interest it comes up with a person who will either commit a crime or fall victim to one while in the Scientist King it suddenly comes up with a match between two commune leaders as its solution to win an impending war against a race that still practices magic.
