Read, read, and then read some more, and particularly in your chosen genre. Once you have a solid project in mind, a writing mentor is key to guiding you through story concept, character, and the craft of writing. My last piece of advice is from my own writing mentor: "There are no rules except one. Don't be boring."

I love history and will read and research for hours. My favorite way to get inspired is to travel to the places where my stories are set and talk to the people in local museums and hear the oral histories. If I'm ever in a slump, all I have to do is crack open a book and it puts me into a different world.

I read an article about the orphan train back in 2007 when I was working on another project. I have a soft spot for orphans. My first big girl job was a case manager working with youthful offenders in Los Angeles after the riots in the 90s. These kids had committed terrible crimes, and many were orphans of the streets like my Charles in You Belong Here Now. Like Charles, the kids I worked with still had hope, still wanted to belong, to have a family, and be worthy of love.
