Once I had the vision for my book and a chapter outline, I either did some research on some aspect of the book or interviewed someone. With that new content, I would try to write about it immediately. I kept track of how many words I wrote in each writing session as I had a goal for how many words the book needed to be. Tracking progress against that goal encouraged and inspired me.

Someone absolutely needed to tell the great story about Brother James Gaffney and how he led the transformation of Lewis University. It is such a positive story and not enough people know about it, or don’t know the whole story. I have been associated with Brother James and Lewis since I was a college student, so I was in a good position to tell the story.

I always found it helpful to talk to people about the subject I was writing about. Conversation is a great stimulant.

I don’t make specific plans for books to read. I have a long list of books I want to read. And I like to read new books of interest to me soon after they come out. I do have a number of authors whose books I read immediately after they are published.
