Paula R.C. Readman A sighting of an UFO 🛸 over the old mill where I grew up in the 1970’s one early evening. A motorcycle police officer arrived on the scene and witnessed it along with my sister and our boyfriends. My mother was too scared to come out of the house to see what it was. The whole place was light up in a fluorescent green. None of us, not even the police could work out where the light was come from. It was overhead and came straight down. Suddenly the light just disappeared.
Paula R.C. Readman I'm more inspired by the nature of humans for my writing rather than the natural world, Cameron. Animals are more logical in their behaviour than humans. You only have to look at the state of the planet to understand humans are not logical creatures. They are more self-centred, greedy and irrational.
If I was an artist then I would be a landscape painter, and my work would reflect my love of the natural world.
In my writing, I'm more interested in writing about human's irrational behaviour.
Stone Angels is about an artist, James Ravencroft and his drive to paint ten masterpieces, but it is also about what drives him to hunt out certain types of models. I guess my plot was really about the old question of whether it is nature versus nurture as to whether someone becomes a serial killer because of their upbringing, or it’s in their nature, which means we have no control over it.
James in, Stone Angels, was neglected by his mother and the reader has to decide whether it was her neglect, or purely circumstance that caused his behaviour.

Paula R.C. Readman The Funeral Birds started life as a BBC Short Story Competition entry. I set aside after it failed to be selected with the idea of turning it into a novel. The characters are based on my neighbours who are a loving older married couple. Dave and Joan have been very supportive of my writing. They have a deep loving relationship and I wanted that at the heart of my book. Of course, in ‘The Funeral Birds’ there’s a witch, a Murder, mystery, and mayhem.
Paula R.C. Readman An Australian Publishers I write for called Black Hare Press posts on the website some amazing submission call out. I enjoy writing for them. It is hard not to be inspired.
Bridge House Publishing also have interesting submission call out too. I enjoy writing early in the morning when I have a clear mind.
Paula R.C. Readman I’m editing a collection of short stories which will be published later in the year.
Paula R.C. Readman Keep writing and keep believing, but most of all keep moving forward no matter how many knock backs you suffer. Start with short story until you have build a writing cv of published work. Writing a novel takes a lot of hard work and dedication, and you can soon lose heart. Once you get a few published stories under your belt you will have more faith in your ability and publishers will see your talent too. Competition wins help too.
Paula R.C. Readman You can write out all your hurt and negative emotions. I find I can draw on all the negative things and the positive things too to give my characters and their situation depth. Nothing is wasted when you’re a writer.
Writing has helped me build more confidence in myself too.
Paula R.C. Readman I have too many unfinished projects on my computer to suffer with writer’s block. I just keep reading until I can find something to finish. Drabbles are a great way to get inspiration rolling again.
