Probably 1810 out West at the beginning of the fur trade. I would be a trapper/explorer. Back then the native people & the trappers got along okay. (Most of the time) & the land was untouched & wild.

The little old man seemed to have been there forever. No one knew much about him, but everyone feared him.

I like the question. Something I hadn't thought of. This is going to get personal, but the biggest mystery in my life is what did I survive a combat tour in Vietnam & so many didn't?

Thanks for your question. My most recent book "Fearless: Twenty-five Fearless Frontier Women" resulted from a book my granddaughter and I wrote last year. "The Mountain Man & The Great Western" The Great Western was the nickname given to Sara Bowman a real person. A number of readers said, "You ought to write about other frontier women & that's how "Fearless" came about.

I don't really get writer's block. If I find myself having a hard time with a story, I put the story aside and work on another project. Usually, after a day or so, I can go back and continue writing the 1st book. The important thing is to write! Even if what you're writing doesn't make much sense. Keep going and you'll break through that block!

Discipline yourself to write something every day. Keep a journal, notepad, or smartphone with you so you can record ideas. Also, read as many books as you can.

I'm working on a co-write with another great Western writer. This book is about a real-life person, Carlotta J. Thompkins aka Lottie Deno. She was a professional gambler and traveled up and down the Mississippi on a steamboat gambling. She had a maid/bodyguard, Mary Poindexter a freed black woman who was 7 feet tall.

First of all, I love to write. Secondly, I love writing stories about the people who ventured into the wilderness. Whether it's fiction or non-fiction, the story of the Old West is a uniquely American experience. There are so many stories yet to be told, that it's impossible for me not to be inspired!
