FREEDOM! When I write I feel a total sense of freedom. I can sit down at my computer with a totally bank mind (my usual state) and then three hours later a whole new aspect of a story has been created. Usually, I spend time planning out what I’m going to write, down to the smallest detail, yet there are times when the words just follow. From where, I do not know but it is a tremendous feeling of freedom when they do. Because I write fantasy, anything is possible. I don’t have to follow any rules, I just need to imagine. As a young lad I dreamt of new worlds and impossible adventures. Now I write about them. How much fun is that?

Writer’s block is not something I’ve had a huge problem with, but when ever the clatter of little words stop I try to distract myself. Going for a walk usually does the trick or a cup of tea while killing bad guys on the PlayStation is another favourite. If I get stuck for a longer period then I switch from writing to artwork. I usually try to make images of certain parts of my stories, usually landscapes. I find switching to a different medium really helps in clearing and re-ordering the mind. Not everyone’s forte, but it seems to work for men.

Simple - Don’t give up. I don’t know how many times I said out loud ‘I can’t do this.’ Any yet here I am. Chuffed or what?

Easy question. Blast: Merry Hell Book Two. I’m hard at work devising all manner of strange and exciting situations for Captain Braveheart and his inept band of men. This time it takes place on a much larger world stage with the fate of all Gurden in their hands.

The short answer is - I’m not sure. The longer answer is - everywhere. I do like to sit somewhere with a cup of tea and watch the world pass by. I’ve done it for years. I watch as a multitude of people pass me by and try to imagine where they are going to and what they are doing to when they get there. It’s at times like these I find my imagination get’s the better of me. You’d be surprised how many dragon slayers live in London.

As a kid growing up in the seventies and early eighties, I gained a love of farce and slapstick with a side order of Second World War movies. On this diet of BBC comedies and Sunday afternoon war stories, used to sit back and imagine far off places full of adventure and daring do. Where the world was both funny and thrilling. As an adult I continued to dream of such things and strived to created fantastical worlds, firstly in creating artistic landscapes and then in written form. Havoc: Merry Hell Book One is a distillation of all these things.
