Andrew M. Tanner Open up a fresh Libreoffice document, stare at the blankness, then start hitting keys at random.

Several lines in, editing mode usually kicks in, and a usable phrase, maybe a whole sentence results.

If that doesn't kick start something, then I'll write snarky comments in the voice of a character, about nothing in particular.
Andrew M. Tanner Significant portions of my writing were completed while a cat competed with the keyboard for lap space. Usually the cow cat. But when she was alive, Havoc the Maine Coon took her share, too.
Andrew M. Tanner Read often, write often. It doesn't matter if what you write at first sucks. Get words down, edit like hell later. 'Good' is always in the eye of the beholder anyway.
Andrew M. Tanner Bits and pieces have been coming into my mind for as long as I can remember. As a grade schooler I used to hang out a lot by myself at recess, carrying on conversations with generals and admirals from World War 2 for no apparent reason. In high school I hunted and fished with my dad quite a lot, and worked at the family firewood business 30 hours or so each week in summer, working at a hydraulic logsplitter. And I served briefly in the military, where I met a lot of great people whose lives were permanently changed by their experiences in Iraq.

But I only recently realized that all the images actually 'fit' together into the same story. Bringing Ragnarok is the (ongoing, developing) result.
Andrew M. Tanner I close my eyes, and scenes come unbidden. It is more like I am compelled to write than inspired a lot of the time.

Now, getting inspired to write a particular story - that's down to what cool things I've read. Witzel's Origins of the World's Mythologies provided the spark needed for me to take a bunch of ideas and work them together into Brining Ragnarok.
Andrew M. Tanner Bringing Ragnarok, Saga of Six Friends and the Apocalypse, Norse style.
