I got the idea for BORDER CROSSINGS (winner of the 2024 Orbis Pictus Award for nonfiction) from visiting the border region with my son and learning how connected ecosystems are between the US and Mexico. When President Trump started building the border wall, no one talked about its huge impact on animals and the environment, and I wanted to write a book to help raise awareness on this crucial issue.

I have two new picture books from Astra Publishing coming out in the next two years, along with an older science book from Lerner titled DEFENDING NATURE: HOW THE US MILITARY PROTECTS THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES. I also have an upcoming adult book, BIRDING FOR BOOMERS—AND EVERYONE ELSE BRAVE ENOUGH TO EMBRACE THE WORLD'S MOST REWARDING AND FRUSTRATING ACTIVITY (Mountaineers Books, fall 2024).

Don't get caught up in all the social media hype, feeling like you have to post something every five minutes. The most critical aspect of your career is to write interesting books and write them well. If you do that, the rest will take care of itself. Just make sure you have a plan to keep paying the bills!

There are two things: working at home and getting to take a nap every day! Getting paid to learn new things is also pretty awesome!

Professional writers don't have time for writer's block, but if I ever run short of ideas, it usually means I have to go have an adventure of some kind. Many of my ideas come from traveling or visiting scientists, and if I keep doing that, I never run out of new book and article ideas.
