For as long as I can remember, I've told myself stories--whatever captures my fancy. I watch them like they're a movie in my head, and when they're so vivid and real I can't stand it, I write them down.

Read. Read. Read. Daydream. Think of a character or two, stick them in a room together in your mind, and see what they do. Learn about story structure and practice finding it in the books you read. Read some more. Write every day, even when you're uninspired and think you're writing garbage. (Garbage is okay. It helps you grow as a writer!) Writing takes great imagination, a willingness to learn, and lots of discipline, but it is so rewarding!

I take a break. Usually just getting away from my laptop for a few hours will readjust my frame of mind and get the creativity flowing again. I like to daydream about my characters--stick them all in a room in my head, with all their current problems and feelings, and see what they do.
If I have to, I can write my way out of writer's block by just typing whatever jumbled story crap comes out of my head. Sometimes I end up deleting everything I've written and sometimes I keep it, but the mental exercise helps prime my brain for the work of crafting a story.
