I got the idea for TEACH YOUR GIRAFFE TO SKI on the very first family ski trip with the kids. They brought along their stuffed animals. During the day, they were taking ski lessons, and in the evening, the stuffed animals were jumping ski champions.

I would strongly advise all aspiring writers to join a critique group with other people who want to write professionally or who are already professional writers. Sometimes you may have to look around to find the best critique partners - the best ones will push you to improve your work through constructive criticism, while also encouraging you to continue through the tough moments. It also helps to join professional writing organizations. Writers for children should strongly consider joining SCBWI (society of children's writers and illustrators). There are writing organizations for all the different genres (romance, sci-fi, etc...). You can also join writing groups on social media. This helps keep you informed about industry trends and best practices.

I noticed that many times when I have trouble writing something that I'm actually dismissing ideas and sentences with thoughts such as "that won't work." When I notice this I have to take a deep breath and remind myself that it's okay when the first draft isn't good. First drafts can be improved with revision, and sometimes new ideas will pop up while you're actually writing.

I have a very long list of over 1500 books on my wish-to-read shelf. Most of the books on my wish-to-read list are picture books, but there are also some chapter books, middle grade books, YA books and a few adult books. I'm working my way through the list, though since I keep adding new books to my to-read shelf, it hasn't been getting any smaller!
