Gerald Thomson I am currently working on a comic version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It attempts to tell Shakespeare’s story while commenting on the work and how the piece is viewed by the general population. There are not many pieces of literature that are required reading in school, so that changes the entire feel of the play (for those who stayed awake during Junior English).
Gerald Thomson Because I write shorter pieces it is easier for me than most writers. I can simply set aside the piece I am working on and work on something else. Also, because the investment is much less in a 6-page piece than in a 300-page novel, I can also see if that writer's block is because of me not identifying how to move forward or if the block is because the idea is flawed to begin with. If I need to throw out an essay it will not be the end of my book.

The other thing I do is I don't put pressure on myself. I write because I enjoy the process. If the process is not flowing then I'll wait until the ideas come.
Gerald Thomson I write humorous essays, so I need many ideas to fill a book. Each essay usually starts with a funny comment that is made about a subject or viewing a topic with a take that makes it seem absurd. For example, I am male, but I received hand-me-down clothes as a child - from my sisters. These were, of course, unisex pieces, but I took that concept to create a world where everything I received as a male child was a hand-me-down item from my sisters.
I started thinking about the times I went to get an item from my mother's purse and how she did everything in her power to keep me from looking into her purse. This was puzzling as a child but more understandable as an adult. But I took that to create an adventure where I purposely peak into the world that is my wife's purse.
You can see that almost anything can be taken to be funny, so I try to keep my options open.
