I love taking an everyday irritation, picking it apart to its root sociological core, understanding the history, context and politics surrounding it, and constructing a solution. For example, I often feel frustrated that my kids are always underfoot, don't play freely outdoors like I used to, which restricts my time and money, since they seem to require that much more time with me. This led me to question why we are all spending so much time with our kids, why they don't have as much agency as a generation ago, the facts about whether they are safe to be alone out of my eyesight, the laws and policies surrounding this and what my own suggestion, based on these facts, is for other parents.

Being a newspaper journalist was the greatest training for me as a writer, as it forced me to think critically about every single word on the page. Also, the sheer volume of writing that job required was rote practice that honed my raw skills, making way for intuition to flourish. So ... my advice? Write, write, write. Seek out and accept criticism. Revise, rewrite and write some more. And kill your darlings. But I think someone else said that first.

When I was young, writing was a way to express myself, sort out my feelings and beliefs, and in school, get positive attention. As I grew up and became a professional journalist, writing became a way to make a living in a way that aligned with both my interests and most impactful way to affect the world in a positive way. Today, it is all of those things!
