I play with paint instead. It used to panic me when I wasn't inspired to write or to paint, but I've learned that my creativity comes in waves. So unless I have a deadline coming up, I give myself some time to step away and do something unrelated. Then inspiration hits again and I'll spend ALL of my time writing or painting.

You can do it in your jammies and at any hour of the day or night.

Run away! Just kidding. Just be persistent. Make yourself write SOMETHING at least once a day, even if it's just, "I have no idea what to write. Writing is hard. Why oh why am I doing this?"

These days, I focus more on the art than the writing, though I do try to blog several times a week. I'm the kind of person who always has too many irons in the fire, so at any given moment you'll find me covered in paint, or breathing in toxic fumes while sculpting out of foam, or on the computer promoting the book and the art, or giving painting lessons, or helping my husband with our haunted attraction, Eerieville, or designing dance-inspired clothes, or, or, or...

I started blogging about what was happening with my family following my dad's diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. I had created several paintings about it all as a sort of self-prescribed art therapy, and a friend suggested I post them on a blog. One thing led to another, and people began suggesting that I put the paintings and the writing together into a book. Idiot that I am, I took the suggestion, having absolutely no idea of what writing and publishing a book entailed. And now I'm simultaneously so happy that I did it, and cursing the world that encouraged me to do it.
