I just finished listening to Murder in an English Village and found it a delightful read. Did you ever live in or travel to the UK to conduct research? Do you think research is sufficient for location or is it absolutely necessary to travel to the setting? My second novel takes place on the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean. I had planned to travel there for research purposes but the pandemic squashed my plans.
Jessica Ellicott Thanks, Stephanie! I have traveled to the UK and feel it has greatly aided my sense of place. As you say, it isn't always possible and there are so many ways to access online research materials as a result of the pandemic that one can make a good effort despite the restrictions. I hope your plans will come to fruition soon and best of luck with your novel!

Jessica Ellicott Thanks so much, Poppy! I love the idea of a prequel and have toyed with the idea of something short about Beryl and Edwina when they were together as girls at finishing school. Perhaps Beryl's solo adventures as an adventuress should be on my mind too!

How do you get inspired to write?
Jessica Ellicott Deadlines and habit.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Jessica Ellicott Research. I went poking about in the years following WWI and all sorts of beguiling information showed up and began to assemble itself. Before long I had a rough sketch of a book.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Jessica Ellicott I promise myself I will make an effort to start, even for thirty minutes. Before I know it the half-hour has passed and I am unblocked.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Jessica Ellicott FOr me it is a sense of being on purpose each time I set to work. I never feel like time at my desk, engaged in writing or revising is ever misspent.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Jessica Ellicott I love to pass on some advice my husband gave to me when I received a seventh agent rejection in six days, "Chin up, pen down". It is probably the best writing advice I ever received. Cheering and admonishing, all in four words. Delightful!

Jessica Ellicott I am beetling away on the second Beryl and Edwina mystery, Murder Flies the Coop.
