I have and I love it (at least what's been published)! The fantastic elements aside, he does a spectacular job developing characters and sewing political intrigue. I love how each chapter is from that character's perspective, and you see what their understanding is of a particular event, but sometimes those perspectives aren't right, and that changes everything.

I plan on diving into PD James. I read a wonderful article about her and I've read brief excerpts and I love the literary quality of the writing. So "Cover Her Face" is on the list.
Pool reading is going to be "Skin Game" by Jim Butcher.
I also hope to get to "Visions of Cody" By Kerouac, and "The Mists of Avalon" by Bradley.

Write and read everyday.
When you first start your writing is going to be choppy and disjointed. You'll have to rely on the plot to get you through. You will go through days where you write and it's horrible, but that's ok because you're going to have to edit anyway. Take Anne Lamott's advice and just get through the sh****y first draft.
You also need to read because you need to read other's styles. You need to absorb everyone's voices, because it's the only way you'll discover your own voice.

I'm working on a 15 book chapterbook series called "The Elsie Jones Adventures". It's about a young girl who loves to read and finds a special library where she's pulled into the books and goes on adventures with the characters of the books. Stay tuned for "Elsie Jones and the Book Pirates" the first book of the series.
