Ryan Uytdewilligen I don't think writer's block truly exists - my head is always filled with new ideas. Where you get stuck I think is making the time to write. And when you do have time and you don't want to do it or your just not in the mood, that's where you can suffer the most blockage. Powering through is important. Finding a project you are passionate about is key.
Ryan Uytdewilligen Having the possibility to connect with people. Maybe, just maybe someone will read something of mine and agree - maybe to even the point where it inspires them or gives them comfort or clarity on something. Or maybe they were just thoroughly entertained. Either way - you made someone feel something positive through pure imagination and thought! I think that's fantastic.
Ryan Uytdewilligen Write! As much as you can! Scripts, novels, short stories, poems, articles - it's all good practice that widens your perspective and portfolio. And then of course, don't just let it sit on your hard drive, send it out into the world!! Write and send! Write and send! Write and send! And don't forget a bit of editing in between.
Ryan Uytdewilligen Oh many things! Penning a new novel, writing a sci-fi film script, sending scripts and projects out into the world to find homes, promoting previously published work, and trying to get a feature film produced. There is ton to be done! I think if you widen your workload and interests, one of those projects is bound to work!
Ryan Uytdewilligen It all depends on what I'm in to at the time. I get "obsessed" with certain movies, shows, bands, time periods - and out of that come ideas. It really is just a way to spend more time exploring certain eras and styles and feelings I like. Writing allows me to do that so I basically want to do it all the time!
Ryan Uytdewilligen I love the 1950’s/ 1960’s world and honestly I just want to get into a time machine and live there. But since time machines aren’t around… just yet… I have to settle for writing. That way I could do a lot of research and paint a picture, describing certain places or aspect of those decades I enjoyed. Movies of the time certainly inspired the look and feel. Paul Newman movies like Hud and The Long Hot Summer for starters. And books like The Outsiders and On the Road – I was just attracted to that meandering feel as well as the greaser/ drive in kind of lifestyle. As for the actual theme and subject matter – it was all beliefs and thoughts I was having and struggling with. I didn’t drive a tractor cross country but I thought and felt the same things as our main character. So I decided to present it all in a stylish 50’s/60’s classic teen adventure kind of way. I’ve been told it reads like a movie because it was always visualized as a movie from that era. I just can’t get enough of that time!
