I'm currently working on the second book in the Shadows of the Northlands trilogy.

First of all, of course, never stop reading, because reading is one of only ways you can improve as a writer. Never stop writing, either (even if you just finished a 500 page monster of a manuscript), because you can only get better with practice.
But I think the most important thing for an aspiring writer is to not be discouraged no matter what happens, no matter the naysayers or your latest writer’s block—even JK Rowling had dozens of rejections before The Philospher’s Stone was published and history was made.

I think it's just the creative freedom to do whatever you want. Officially.

Whenever I feel like I can't write anything worthwhile, or all my ideas dry up, I just bull through whatever scene I'm stuck at (enduring all my cringes and flinches at my own writing), and edit later. This helps me get that stupidly stubborn scene out of the way, and I can prevent any drop in the quality of my writing.
