Would you ever write another story similar to Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances? I've had this book for a while and finally read it and I have to say it is the most beautiful story/book I have read in a really long time. It truly is a book that makes you fall in love with reading and I absolutely loved it. It deserves a 10 star rating or more :)

I loved your book so much! I am a sucker for magical realism with a love story, so one with a character as unique and wonderful as Weylyn- gah it just made me so happy. So my question is, how important are characters to you when writing? Thank you!
Ruth Emmie Lang Hi Zoë! Thank you so much :) When I'm writing, I probably spend the most time developing my characters. It's important to me to have characters that I can relate to and empathize with, even if the choices they make are not the ones I would make. Once I get to know them and figure out what motivates them, then the plot just falls into place!

Where do you get your inspiration for writing?
Ruth Emmie Lang Nature inspires me a lot. If I have writer's block, I like to go on a walk or a run in the woods. Also, reading work by talented authors or watching a well-written movie/TV show is a big motivator for me to work on my own projects.

I am thinking about publishing my children's picture book with Amazon. I know if I do that book sellers like Barnes and Nobles, Walmart, Target etc. Will not have my book on their shelves. Since I've decided to self publish should I worry about that?
Ruth Emmie Lang I'm not sure I can really answer that question as I don't have any experience self-publishing. Good luck!

Ruth Emmie Lang Probably a thrush because I love their bird song!

What encouragement would you give to other young writers out there?
Ruth Emmie Lang Don't shy away from constructive feedback. Personally speaking, I only started really growing as a writer after workshopping my stories with others. :)

Do you prefer books without or with illustrations? Do you think, that without the drawings, you can imagine anyway you want? In your own wonderful mind? Or do you think that the drawings make the story come to life--or do you think both make a good book?
Ruth Emmie Lang I think it depends on the intended audience (obviously, kids books tend to have more drawings), but I personally like books that have a little art in them, especially at the head of a chapter or another natural break in the story. If it feels right to you, go for it!

If there was one book, that you could have written (that someone else has written), what would it be?
Ruth Emmie Lang If I could have written any book it would be St. Lucy's Home for Girls Who Were Raised By Wolves (by Karen Russell)! Her prose is stunning and her stories have the perfect amount of strangeness.

What book genre do you like?
Ruth Emmie Lang I like all kinds of different genres, but I actively seek out contemporary stories with a little splash of whimsy or surrealism. Honestly, I'll read anything with great characters, and a sense of humor is a huge plus!

Ruth Emmie Lang I'd like to, yes! I'm currently working on a new idea that I think has a lot of promise :)

Who was or is your favourite writer?
Ruth Emmie Lang The Lord of the Rings are my favorite books, but in terms of style of prose, I love Karen Russell. I kept putting down Swamplandia because I had to write down my favorite passages!

Ruth Emmie Lang Thank you! I'm in the early stages of a new project that I think has potential, so I'm seeing where that goes.

what place in the world would you love to live?
Ruth Emmie Lang If I could live anywhere, I would live in the Pacific Northwest! I love evergreen forests and mountains, so I'm sure I'd feel right at home there :)
