I used to write for magazines on deadlines and have found that great training ground for writing novels. One just has to work at it until it comes right, So I'm not sure I've ever really had a bad case of writers block. If in doubt about a scene, for example, I'll just walk away from my laptop and allow it to ferment in my imagination. Generally what happens is I'll wake up the next morning with the solution.

From a writing exercise that consisted of attempting to write a scene in just 100 words. I started wth the phrase 'can you lift it' and the burial scene for the first chapter simply popped into my head.
