My to-be-read pile is always big, always fluid. I'm currently reading an English translation of Albert Camus' 'The Myth of Sisyphus.' Next, I think I'll reread 'The Shining' - Stephen King is one of my favourite authors - before reading 'Doctor Sleep.' I'm tempted to reread Hanya Yanagihara's 'A Little Life' - which I read last year and immediately rated as one the best, most powerful things I've ever read - but it is tremendously powerful and emotive and I'm not sure I'm ready for it again yet.

My favourite book to read is 'On the Road' by Jack Kerouac. I bought my first copy at Shakespeare and Co. in Paris about twenty years ago and I've read it several times since then. I always enjoy it, always find something new, each time I read it. If I could, I'd put myself on that road with Sal and Dean and share in their adventures.

I've had several periods of so-called writer's block over the years, as I'm sure most writers have. I used to worry about it but, as time moves on and I become more experienced, more aware, I've begun to relax because I know it's never the end. I've learned that, eventually, the words will always come again and it's best not to force it.

For me, the best thing about being a writer is being able to share my ideas and stories with other people. Having the opportunity to connect with other writers and with readers is a wonderful thing.

Whisky for Breakfast, recently published by Bridge House (November 2020), includes thirty-five short stories that I'd been working on for about five years, so it's a varied collection of plots and character. Where do I get the ideas from? I've always found this a difficult question to answer because the truth is that, in many cases, I don't really know. Certainly, it's not possible for me to fully articulate the when, what, how and why of it. Sometimes, for example, something as simple as a particular word - either read or overheard - will spark an idea for a story and/or a character; sometimes I'll come up with the title first and work from that. The process is rarely the same.

I've always been a voracious reader and I don't think I'd be able to write - anything, to any standard - without that as a starting point. Also, increasingly so, I feel compelled to write: writing is a huge part of my life and I have to get the words out, to get them on the page.

I'm currently working on three things: a second collection (which, ideally, will include a novella and about fifteen short stories), a short-story collection written entirely in Scottish/Glaswegian vernacular, and a novel. The novel, provisionally titled The Fifth Philosophy, is an ambitious piece of historical/alternate-history fiction. These are the main projects that are ongoing in various draft stages, while my notebooks and other scribblings are never far away, of course.
