My secret life could be a plot for a murder mystery.

When Tony was 9, he lost his aging parents to a raging apartment building fire in Chicago and the tragedy haunted his dreams for years - even after he moved to northern California to start a new life. Restful sleep never came easy to Tony, but last night it grabbed him by the throat and choked him until he awoke to find his bedroom roaring in scorching hot flames, the result of a raging forest fire.

Randy, I'm in the final stages of putting it together now. Final, polish edit in progress. I'm reviewing cover designs right now. I'm shooting for mid-October launch. I want to make sure it's quality writing, editing and design. I'm really happy with how it's coming together, but anxious about how it will be received nonetheless. Glad you're watching for it. Coming soon!

I have to block out the time and settle into the writing routine that I've found suits me best. I write in 2-3 hour blocks (usually in the early morning), then do a quick review of what I've written, then walk away from it. Later in the day after I've had time to think through what I've written, I go back to it and read it again, revising where it makes sense. Then I put it aside and start thinking about what I am going to write the next day. Usually, by morning I'm ready to start anew.

I'm working on two pieces of fiction right now. In a general sense, I've figured out the arc of both stories. I'm about 4,000 words into the first draft of one novel. Hope to finish the first draft by spring. Then I'll decide whether to continue working on it to finish, or pick up the second story and see where that goes.

This is the advice I have always given young writers I have hired or students I have worked with over the years: Never quit learning - read and write something interesting every day of your life. Make writing natural and automatic - like breathing.

I get to create worlds into which I can take my friends, and hopefully, many readers.

When I hit a wall while writing, I try not to let it stop me. I just pick the story up in another place where I am ready to write. Continuing the creative process in another place sometimes sparks an idea that opens a window that releases the block. I also come from a newspaper background. Writing on deadline with a sweating, drooling, heaving editor standing over you means you find a way past writer's block - or look for another job.

In my former life, I was editor of a magazine called True North, which covered most of Northern Michigan, including Mackinac Island. It occurred to me that it's a wonderful vacation destination, but would also be a great place to hatch a murder mystery.
