Sam Moussavi is a novelist and freelance writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has written two sets of Young Adult novels for EPIC Press (Minneapolis, MN) as well as many nonfiction sports titles.

It sounds simple but an aspiring writer should write and write often. I've had occasion to cross paths with other people who tout themselves as writers but have no pages to show for it. Be sure you're not a person who claims to be something you're not. Namely, if you say you are a writer, make sure you can slap some pages on the table! It doesn't matter if those pages are good or quality right away. Having them to begin with is a good enough start.

I take a deep breath, do something active such as hiking or running, then throw myself back at the page! There's simply no substitute for making yourself write sometimes, even if you're not feeling inspired. Hope that helps!
