After some moments of neurotically staring into the flame of an old yellowish candle on a copper candleholder, standing on an oak round table before him, a sinister cloaked figure suddenly looks up, straight into the eyes of a kid, sitting at the opposite side of the table in this otherwise dark and empty stone room with only one door. The child then frowns but keeps looking at the man while it slowly moves one hand below the table towards the knife, attached to the side of its belt, until a hard knock on the door harshly interrupts the apparent serenity.

Six weeks too early was a bit critical at the time of my birth. But also being born with my navel cord around my neck twice and an entirely purple face makes one wonder about the mystery of life itself.
My life up till now provided many mysteries, if one chooses to see them. The young rook that came into my life is a little mystery which I romanticized somewhat. And I choose a consistent camera-perspective for the novel KRA. So in fact, that random young rook actually made me write a novel.

The tale of KRA describes a time and a world of many ages ago.
I have no specific desire to live in such a time but I am somehow part of the story.
The ambiance images are the remains of my initial intentions to create a film and portray only the atmosphere of the first chapter. I love to create, fantasize about it and even write about the imagery in my mind. However, as the story unfolds and the characters evolve, I prefer to just safely dwell away from time to time in stead of wishing I was there.

One can endure and simply continue to write. Sometimes this works and the writing gradually comes back into the flow.
Personally, I need a break every now and then in order to keep the blood flowing, so to speak. I prefer to watch the birds in my garden regularly for example.
But if a writer's block is caused by external elements, occupying the mind with burdensome issues or worries, it is another matter. In that case one can construct a wall to wedge these blocking elements and remain focused on the story.
However, on the long term it is of course better to take time and deal with too distracting and blocking things before one can continue to write with a clear mind.
On the other hand, without darkness, we would not know light and without worries or grief, happiness would not exist. Contrast is an essential aspect in life, especially when it comes to matters like inspiration.

Many things in life can inspire me, tiny little things or major events and anything in between.
It is however not always easy to sit down, focus on the current novel, chapter or paragraph, picture things in my mind and subsequently convert this imagery to sentences and words. It just comes, sometimes in a rush, sometimes gradually.
Especially the fact that I'm Dutch makes writing in the English language to an extra challenge.

I found a young wild blue-eyed rook, abandoned by other rooks it seemed, sitting on a rock in my garden during the summer of 2005. The young bird attached to the me and returned daily to sit on my arm or shoulder and eat the food I provided.
But a wild bird is better off being somewhat afraid of humans and some children told me that the rook's presence close to some other people was not apreciated and brutaly punished.
Some years later, this young domesticated wild rook inspired me and the idea for the story of KRA gradually took shape.
