Philip Freeman Dear Angie,

"Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" ("My fault, my great fault") as Sister Deirdre would have said in Latin. It should be "Kildare " in both cases. I proofread the text a dozen times but I missed my mistake. Thank you for pointing it out. I'll get it fixed for the paperback edition.

Best wishes, Philip
Philip Freeman A great question. Yes, any educated person in the ancient or medieval world knew about the North Pole. From the time of the early Greeks, everyone knew the earth was a sphere and that it was colder the farther north you went. The idea that people in the Middle Ages thought the earth was flat is a modern myth.
