It took me approximately two years (because I barely had any experience and there were other things that were going on.. :P) And I chose to Self-Publish because there would have been things I would have had to get done that took a lot more time and money, and I wanted to have full control over it. Hope that answered your questions. :)

Just write. Don't stop. The editing and taking out can be done later. How will you have a story if you don't write it? And also, it's good to have a large vocabulary.
