M. Ullrich Hi! Thank you so much for the question. One of my favorite steps of writing a new book is coming up with the dedication. It’s so much fun to come up with something that properly describes the love I feel AND tie it into the book. I actually met my wife at a former job. She was a new hire and I was the employee tasked with training her. We struck up a friendship that flourished over course of a few years and then one day it all changed into something so much bigger and unexpected. The rest is history, but such a beautiful history that it’s made its way into my dedications.
M. Ullrich My love for emotional stories. The idea came to me out of nowhere one morning and I knew I had to write it. Life isn't always pretty and neat and happy, just like how romances aren't always light and fluffy.
M. Ullrich I'm blushing! Thank you so much. I've never considered a sequel to Life in Death because I'm happy with where and how Marty and Suzanne's story ended, but I have considered bringing them back as secondary characters in another novel. I think about these characters often and have an idea of where they'd be today. Who knows? Maybe you will read about them again.
M. Ullrich This is a tough question because I have a tendency to fall in love with just about every fictional couple I cheer for, but I'll go with Kylie and Blair from "All That Matters". Their banter kept me entertained even in the most uneventful scenes, and their story together was just wonderful. Cheers to Susan X. Meagher for writing such great women!
M. Ullrich Oddly enough, my wife woke up one morning and told me about a brief dream she had. We talked about it for a few minutes and shortly after Fortunate Sum was a fairly solid idea. Her REM cycle gave me the foundation and I built upon that.
M. Ullrich Right now I'm actually taking a small break. I just recently submitted the first draft of my second book, Life in Death, to my publisher for review and initial edits. While I wait to hear back about that I'm just relaxing a bit and brainstorming for my next book.
M. Ullrich It's a tie between the pride and satisfaction that accompanies a completed project AND the feeling you get the very first time someone close to you asks, "Is this going to end up in your book?" You never quite know, do you?
M. Ullrich Write and believe. I know it sounds horribly simplistic and these exact sentiments have been said over and over, but it's true. In order to be a writer you must write and above all else you must believe in whatever it is you're writing. Write what makes you happy and be sure to write what makes you sad. Push yourself and believe in yourself.
M. Ullrich Music. It's amazing what a well written song can do for my creative mind. For years now I have caught myself imagining multiple scenarios playing out with a specific song or album serving as the soundtrack. The best thing about this is that even if I don't have a pen and paper, the ideas can come with me anywhere. Whether I'm going for a long drive or taking a shower- the music will play and ideas can blossom continuously from there.
M. Ullrich I have a hard time answering this question because I have yet to find a tried and true method. Every bout of writer's block is different- sometimes I'm able to push past it and just write, regardless of quality, and go back to edit later. Other times I have to walk away and work on a different scene or even a different project all together. There are even times where putting on the right song can help. I never know what to expect!
