Sara R. Turnquist The wi-fi is down. We have no idea when it will be back up.
Sara R. Turnquist I started out reading a bit of Science Fiction. There were quite a few worlds that the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation went to I'd like to visit...I'd love to see the Shire from Lord of the Rings...and I was absolutely taken away by Kathy Tyers Firebird Series. There are some places in that series I'd love to see, too.
Sara R. Turnquist Sorry to just now be noticing this...I typically alternate between fiction and non-fiction (with every other non-fiction being a writing craft book). Some of the books on my list this year are: Tamara Leigh's "Age of Conquest" books, Jody Hedlund's Bride Ship Series, the last two books of the Firebird Series (by Kathy Tyers), some James Scott Bell and Susan May Warren books on writing craft as well.
Sara R. Turnquist Doing writing prompts, free-handing (writing on paper) from a character's point of view about something not really relevant to the story, or editing a previous scene...anything to get that pump primed and the creative juices flowing.
Sara R. Turnquist Having an outlet for these creative juices...for these story ideas. Meeting others who think the way you do. Who understand that you make up people and have them talk to each other...that sometimes your characters frustrate you and upset you with the things you do. And that sometimes "just delete it" doesn't work. Once the character does it, you can't un-write it. Non-writers don't really understand that concept.
Sara R. Turnquist Have determination and confidence. If you don't believe in your work, how can you expect any one else to?

Now, read this as "be confident" not "be arrogant"...there is a fine line there. Don't cross it :-)
Sara R. Turnquist I am in editing mode. I have two completed stories. One about the Cherokee Trail of Tears and one about the Women's Suffrage Movement. Once they are pre-edited by me, they will go through a professional editing phase. Then it's onto the next step (publication).
Sara R. Turnquist I find inspiration in so many places. Snippets on the history channel, concepts from life...like the idea of a second marriage and how does a widow learn to love again after loss.

When I actually sit down to write, I sometimes have to find inspiration. Just like anything, I'm not always in the "mood" to write. But it's my job. So, I have some tricks that can help me catch that muse. Writing prompts, free handing (writing on paper) in a character's point of view about something that is not necessarily relevant to anything, or just reading back over/editing a previous scene. Sometimes you have to "get the pump primed" so to speak.
Sara R. Turnquist Believe it or not...a cemetery. I don't frequent cemeteries, but I have a friend who loves the history found there. Well, we did find an interesting set of gravestones that indicated a second marriage had taken place after a brief first marriage. There were more details there, but I don't want to spoil the book. From this trip was born "A Convenient Risk". It doesn't take much for a writer's brain to start fabricating a story :-)
