Thank you for the lovely question, Devika. The characters and the story idea come to me first. Once I feel there is enough substance, I begin visualizing the scenes, for my strength is in 'seeing' the heroes and heroines, the locations, the lily ponds and the gentle swans - and then capturing them in words for my perceptive readers!

Sorry for the delay in answering! My favourites are the goddesses, for there are so many hidden dimensions to them, so many interpretations possible. Durga is a favourite, for she epitomises the modern woman whose nature mirrors hers on different occasions - from the gentle Gauri to the fiery Kali.

Check what has been written earlier. Then see if your characters are ready to go down the path you have planned for them. Maybe they have come to life and don't want to! That's good, isn't it? A block is your mind telling you to stop and ponder. You can do it. Keep at it.

Read, read, read. Observe life, people, mannerisms, characters. Then write, write, write. It's a lot of hard work for most writers, so be prepared to persevere and to be resilient. Good luck!

From life. From people I meet. From news I read or see on television. Life's so wonderful and generates a million ideas!
