Don't worry about why you're writing, just enjoy it. Give yourself permission to block that time aside. It's not selfish any more than knitting socks for your aunt is selfish. Build something that can transport you, and work at making it clear enough to take others along for the ride.

The thing I like about writing is the same thing I like about reading - moving into someone else's world for a while and travelling through the story with them. With both there is a joy of discovery, of transport. I can get out of my own way for a while. As a writer, this transport lasts a little longer and I get to share the journey of my characters with others.

For me, inspiration, or the compulsion to write comes from knowing what's ahead of my characters, knowing how they will be moved or changed by what's ahead and being excited to get their journey down on "paper." If I talk out a story with someone, the motivation to write disappears; the story has been told.

I don't believe in a full-on Writer's Block but two things can stop you; you're being too critical of your draft, or you've taken your characters in a direction they wouldn't have gone. Fix those and you're on your way again.
