Chuck Mallory The night I heard, but could not see, a Sasquatch spotted in my area. I was 12. And it IS a novel—the middle-grade manuscript I just finished.
Chuck Mallory I don't tolerate it, that's how. I don't talk about it, I don't use that phrase, and I refuse to believe in it. A lack of belief in it wipes out its existence.
Chuck Mallory From a UFO. That's all I can say for now.
Chuck Mallory I don't. I sit down and start writing. I allow myself a couple of diversions if it's really hard. If I write and it's not going well, I give myself another 10 min. or so diversion. Then I sit back down to write. This goes on all day until I reach my quota, regardless of the quality of my writing. If my weekdays are not as productive as I would like, I work over the weekend. It isn't about inspiration--it's about making myself write regardless of what is going on.
Chuck Mallory Lena: Wild Girl on the Prairie, the story of what happened to Laura Ingalls Wilder's cousin Lena after the events in "By the Shores of Silver Lake." I've done research for 4 years, and Lena had her own "long winter" experience, too.
Chuck Mallory Think a lot. Think about why you're writing on the subject. Ponder why you are the best person to tell this story. Ask yourself if there's a better, more personal story you can tell. Ask yourself if you feel enough emotion about your protagonist, this story, this outcome. Keep writing, but always take time to think. Just to think, not to write, and reach deep inside to find what is the heart of your story.
