There are definite moments when a creative person needs to walk away from their art. Let those moments happen and let yourself rest.
But then come back. Writing is always hard. Always. Take rests when they're needed, but come back and try again. Keep trying.
That's what got me through the difficult parts of Come Six to Seven: giving myself permission to catch my breath, but not allowing myself to run from the story, at the same time.
A great song sure helps too.

My writing usually involves finding an idea that's interesting, building a very simple shell for the story, then letting the story take on its own life. Watching the story unfold in front of me is one of the best parts of writing. There are magic moments in which I feel like a conduit more than a writer. I was simply present and faithful, and the story told itself. It doesn't get any better than that, and I think readers pick up on that genuine attempt to tell a story as faithfully as possible.
My other favorite part of being an author is seeing someone's face or hearing her/his voice when they "get it" after reading one of my works. That moment of connection is priceless. I enjoy seeing the story leave my hands and enter a reader's life and become theirs as much as mine.

Music moves me more than any other medium. When I sit down, and I need to write, but I'm worn out, I find one of my favorite songs. Crank that thing up, close my eyes, and get in the zone. Then, write...

I had another novel in the works before Come Six to Seven that I love dearly, but it needed more time before I could figure it out.
So I took a break from it and finished Come Six to Seven. But it's now time to come back this other book that means a lot to me, but will take just as much to finish.

Sit in chair. Write something. Anything. Do it again the next day. Keep going. When you feel like quitting, take a break. Then repeat.
That's really it. No magic formula. Just hard work when others give up. You'll get there. I promise. Just write.

Visiting a small town that I used to live in, I walked into an antique shop. The door opened behind me, and someone walked in. I instantly had the idea, what if someone walked into an antique shop with an interesting find? What would happen if it was something very peculiar that changed the lives of those in the town?
I went back to the place we were staying and wrote the first chapter that night. Didn't know much about the book yet, but it took shape little by little.
