Ruth Harrigan Catherine and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. They had such a profound love, albeit tragic.
Ruth Harrigan If I get writer's block, I take a deep breath and lower my expectations of what I'll produce. Then I'll write down phrases and ideas until I write at least three or four pages at a sitting, which at some point usually turns into a story. I often use only bits and pieces of these writings, but the real silver lining to this method is I find that if I get 'stuck' in a work, reviewing my 'notes' helps me finish.
Ruth Harrigan I often just feel an urge to write after reading some books or having an interesting discussion with someone (or a group) and then the writing flows freely. It's a pretty strong tug to write at those times!
Ruth Harrigan I wrote The Power Chair Pole Vaulter of Paluga County and other short stories about disability as a result of posting short stories on my blog A Different Light (word press) and receiving feedback from teachers and students that there was a need for course materials in this area. Over the past seven years, I've responded to many requests to use my short stories and poetry in classrooms ranging from elementary school through college. I bundled the most requested works together into volumes and will continue to add to this series when I can. I've really appreciated the many emails from both students and teachers, as well as art work, that resulted from sharing my work.
Ruth Harrigan Being a writer, especially of fiction, allows me to transport myself anywhere at any time! I call it 'vicarious traveling' - it's inexpensive and readily available via reading too.
Ruth Harrigan I'm currently working on a longer book of poetry and more YA short stories.
