This is my favorite question so far: being a writer means freedom, and this is the most exciting thing in life. Freedom to create worlds, give birth to dreams and bring memories back to life; freedom to create characters and people, have them live the life they choose for them; freedom to feel like someone else.

I try to go over it, focusing on something else and waiting for new ideas to come to me - I can read a few pages of a book, or a news article, or listen to music: there's always something that drags me back to my story.

Inspiration can come from anywhere: a news on a paper, a memory from my past or a story from a friend. A word or a face can pick my interest: who could that person be? What's their secret? What are their joys and their sorrows? Sometimes I cannot stop myself from looking at people and asking myself questions about their lives: if I don't have the answers (because you wouldn't ask a perfect stranger "Can you tell me the story of your life"!) I build them.

Alexander Williams came to me one morning, last winter: I had wanted to write some short stories for some time, and I was doing some research on old New York Times articles about extraordinary events happening to normal people in the city - what you would call local facts. Dr. Williams was the answer to how to connect different people, whose lives don't have much in common: a psychoanalyst in New York sees a very diverse humanity, and would have the perception and depth to solve even a complicated mystery.
