Michael Wescott Loder Some stories come easily. Others bog down. When they do, I walk away from them and do something else. Sometimes I go back, sometimes I don't. I long ago decided that I would not waste time staring at a screen when I had nothing to say. If I am "in the groove" of a story, every night in bed, I am writing the next part in my mind. By the time I am writing again, the story is already in my mind and ready to type into the program.
Michael Wescott Loder Most of my fiction has started with an image, such as a girl's braids stapled to a fence post, or a girl imprisoned in a puppet's body. Once I have that image written down, I need to know what is the story behind the picture. I goes from there.
Michael Wescott Loder A workshop I attended assigned us to write the opening paragraphs of three historical YA novels. I have since turned one of these paragraphs into a full historical novel, another one is a work in process and I still might do something with the third.
