Who was my mother?
I was adopted as a baby in the days when you didn't get to see your original birth certificate. I have since, of course, but I never 'found' my birth mother, and wouldn't anyway have been brave enough to turn up on the doorstep of someone who (I do know) managed very effectively to hide from her family the fact that I ever existed.

What gender do you want them to be?

I had a short story longlisted in one year's National Literacy Trust short story competition. I had entered two versions of a new Cinderella story written from different viewpoints, so I wrote a third - the godmother's - and merged all three into The Godmother.
The Godmother was actually published before Pond People, but I'd been thinking about Pond People for longer (tiny people with gills that live in a fishpond) so it wasn't really the most recent idea.

With difficulty. I firmly believe that without good storyline even the most accomplished writer won't be read. Sadly, I struggle to think one up.

this year I'm concentrating on short stories for competitions and the next anthology for our writing group, the Whittlesey Wordsmiths, due for publication in Autumn 2022.

Look up anything you're not sure of: grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, technique. background... (and advice you were given xx decades ago at school may well have changed. Style is an obvious one, but there are fashions in grammar and punctuation too.) there's a lot of help out there for the aspiring writer. Subscribe to some blogs and interact with them. Start your own. It's time consuming but does wonders for your confidence.

For me - it helps me sleep at night - no, really. If I've been writing all day I sleep soundly all night. I do keep that notebook under my pillow though in case I wake with an idea. Otherwise I will stay awake trying to fix it in my head but still not remember it in the morning.
