Loraine Despres I love stories. Before I learned to read, I was always after any literate adult to read to me. When friends came over, we didn't play sports, we played make-believe and acted out stories. I wrote my first novel when I was ten. It was about pirates. The reviews were unanimous. "The child needs her head examined."
Loraine Despres Romeo and Juliet, because every time I see or read it, always hope the priest will get there in time and no one will die.
Loraine Despres I love communicating with my imaginary friends.
Loraine Despres I'm working on a new novel about three women, a twentieth century lawyer who's a failure with men, a nineteenth century southern belle, who's facing destitution, and a voodoo queen with her own agenda. Love, time travel, magic, and murder, but on a deeper level it's a meditation on what we've lost and what we've gained in the amazing twentieth century.
Loraine Despres You read about the successes. But it's hard to make a living as a writer and getting harder. Ask yourself: are you really willing to spend hour after hour sitting inside behind a computer writing, rewriting and polishing your sentences, while you communicate with your imaginary friends? If not, take a walk in the park, play basketball, go swimming and don't feel guilty, but enjoy the precious days of your life.
Loraine Despres I generally go downstairs and open the refrigerator. Sometimes when the light comes on I get a flash of what to write and run upstairs. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work.
