Write anyway, or read Tolkein, then write a poem.

Those moments when you sit back with your published book and realize it's the best thing you've read in a long time. Then you find something better, and you can't wait to take your characters into a more powerful story written even more beautifully. English is an amazing language, a tool capable of ever-growing genius.

Read read read--all kinds of writing--then write, set it aside, rewrite it, set it aside, and read it again, until it sends shivers down your spine. Then read it aloud and correct the rhythm, typos, and "clever" turns of phrase that don't add to the story.

I am currently working on the final edits suggested by my publisher for a rewrite of A Place Beyond Man. It will be called The View Beyond Earth, and will be released with the third in the Archives of Varok series, The Alien Effect, which we will be proofing soon.

As the series developed, it became obvious that Shawne, the human baby of a Place Beyond Man who grows up in the book, The Webs of Varok, would want to return to Earth and help solve its challenging dilemmas. They do, in The Alien Effect, to be released Nov. 3. Since I enjoy trying to keep my stories close to reality, the attractive aliens stir up some trouble for themselves on Earth, and their ideas pose difficult challenges to Shawne's students.

I read the work of steady state economist Herman Daly, published in the 1970's. His ideas seemed so reasonable, I believed they could be portrayed in fiction, so I wrote A Place Beyond Man as an experiment and found I loved tweaking words, sculpting characters, and bringing the fantasy of neighborly aliens down to reality.
