Malgudi, the invented town in R.K. Narayan's books. I just love the way he has conjured up that place. I would go for coffee in The Boardless Hotel and listen to the tall tales of the Talkative Man...

Summer is over, but I have been working my way through a few short story collections that are proving to be very worthwhile, especially THE PENGUIN BOOK OF JAPANESE STORIES, the COMPLETE STORIES of Isaac Bashevis Singer, and LIFE IS A DREAM by Gyula Krudy. I'm not in a rush to finish these. I am enjoying them too much and intend to progress through all three at a leisurely pace.
As for novels, John Steinbeck's SWEET THURSDAY is one I have just begun reading. It's a sequel to CANNERY ROW, which I read at the start of the year and absolutely loved. When I have finished it, I will probably read either R.K. Narayan's THE PAINTER OF SIGNS or maybe another Kinky Friedman crime novel.

I was the first man to lay eyes upon her breasts. But they all rolled off...

Not directly, but indirectly, yes!
I am planning to write a series of stories about other strange or absurd detectives and Zwicky Fingers will appear in some of them in a cameo role.

If I wasn't me and I wanted to engage with me but in a way that made fun of me, I guess I would try to find out what obsessions I had and use those as the point of comedy engagement...

I only just say this question! Yes I am well, thanks. How are you?

I never get writer's block. If I ever had writer's block I would regard it as a message to stop writing and go and do something else. I hope that this will always be the case.

The freedom to be one's own boss, to live and work anywhere one chooses. But also the freedom to share one's imagination with other people in a way that will hopefully inspire and thrill them.

Keep going. Never give up. Perseverance is the main quality that is needed to get published. Remember that you will encounter many people who want to discourage you. Ignore these people and believe in yourself. It's the only way.

I always work on many things at the same time. It's just the way I do things and every writer has a preferred method. No method is inherently better than any other. At the moment I am working on the following:
* Two more pieces to finish my THIRTY TRIBUTES TO CALVINO book,
* A 'Professor Moriarty' story,
* A 'Jack the Ripper' story (both this and the one above are for anthologies to be edited by Maxim Jakubowski),
* A 'Professor Challenger' story (for an anthology I only heard about last week).
* A story set in one of the counties of Ireland (for an anthology that will contain one story about each of the counties).
The deadlines for most of these are fast approaching, so I need to switch into a higher gear quickly!

Ideas come to me unasked. They just pop into my head. It wasn't always like this. When I started out I had to work hard to generate ideas, to chase them and pin them down in stories. Now it's easy. However, I am also inspired by experiences and people.

The book I am currently working on is a collection of tribute stories to the writer Italo Calvino. The idea for this book therefore comes entirely from my love of Calvino, who has inspired and enthused me more than any other writer I have yet discovered.
