Life In General is a compilation of essays and blog posts I’ve written over the past eight years, all related to the process of crossing the border into middle age. I intended it mainly as a personal project, a way to archive the writing I’d done online into a tangible book I could offer to friends and family. It has turned out to have a wider audience than I expected, and because of that I’ve been able to connect with so many other women at my stage of life who say they feel inspired and encouraged by my stories.

Most often it’s through reading. Right now I’m reading some wonderful memoirs, and I’m also studying “how-to” books on the subject of memoir writing.
Life inspires me - the ordinary extraordinary occurrences of daily living.

I’m writing often in my brand new online space at the Life In General blog. (http://beccarowan.com/blog)
And I’m pondering a new book, a memoir. I haven’t quite narrowed down the focus, but it has to do only children: being one, being the daughter, wife, and mother of one.

The basics? Read a lot. Write a lot. Share your work - start a blog or take a class.
Beyond that, write honestly and truthfully from your heart. Learn what it is that burns inside you to be said. If you’re willing to share your experiences in a way that is meaningful to others, you’ll find the greatest satisfaction.

As Dani Shapiro says: “Everything you need to know about life can be learned from a genuine and ongoing attempt to write.” I believe that, and it’s one of the biggest benefits to my writing practice. The other wonderful thing about writing is the way it connects me to other people - through writing on the internet, and especially with Life In General, I’ve created so many new connections, and reinforced existing ones, by telling stories about life that are familiar to other women.

Read. When I don’t feel like writing, I read some of my favorite inspirational authors: Dani Shapio, Katrina Kenison, Anna Quindlen, Anne Lamott. Filling my head with their good sentences always inspires me to create some of my own.
