Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Sigrid Vansandt The idea for Murder On The Caledonian Queen came from a fascination I've had lately for Scotland and for canal cruising. Also, I love how Agatha Christie always took her readers to exotic places. I think I've watched every Youtube and documentary there is about cruising canals. The Caledonian Canal is probably one of the most beautiful in the world. I just thought it would be fun to take my readers there on a crazy adventure with Helen and Martha!

How do you get inspired to write?

Sigrid Vansandt I really enjoy listening to other people's stories in whatever format that story comes in. Movies, reading other books, talking with people, and music are all forms of storytelling that inspire me.

What are you currently working on?

Sigrid Vansandt I'm working on a new Helen and Martha mystery and I'm bringing the girls home to the States. Arkansas, the Civil War, maybe a pirate or two, and some fun adventures involving Martha's poker-playing Aunt Tilda will figure in this new book.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Sigrid Vansandt I have to make myself sit down, focus, and put words on the page. It's a wonderful experience when the ideas start to flow, but this usually works best when I designate a set time every day to work. Give yourself permission to designate this time. Your writing has value and it's okay to tell everyone "I'm a writer!" Family and friends will learn to respect the time you give to your work and your productivity will be its own reward.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Sigrid Vansandt The research! I love it and sometimes I have to realize I'm getting bogged down by doing too much of it. I also really enjoy watching how the characters come to life. My goal in writing is to give my readers a fun, loving place to be where I hope they have a few laughs and go to sleep with happy dreams.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Sigrid Vansandt I watch lots of good movies, documentaries, and listen to music. Do a little gardening and piddle about the house with easy projects. This rejuvenates me and sparks the imagination.
