R.C. Durkee The fictional book world that I might like to be in (that comes to mind first) is Michael Crichton's "Timeline." I am interested in archaeology, anthropology, and history, and "Timeline" has all three interests. It is set in Medieval Times with castles, knights and siege machines like trebuchets that I find fascinating. I would like to see the great forests, and the world before light pollution, vehicles, heavy industry and urban sprawl. I would also like to experience the fresh air and quiet sounds that world would have. I would be an archaeologist with the team that travels back in time, and use my knowledge of the past and future to help me survive the era. Since I was raised on a farm with livestock and horses, and know survival skills, I would be an asset to the team.
But ...I would also like to be in the book I wrote, "Rum Run," and be my book's protagonist, Rusty!
R.C. Durkee Most of my summer reading will be non fiction Civil War history, but I try to squeeze in fiction for those rare days on the deck swing. My plans are to read "Epitaph" by Mary Doria Russell, "Dead Key" by D.M. Pulley and "I Remember You" by Yrsa Sigurdarottir.
R.C. Durkee I am presently writing a book about such a mystery that has impacted almost my entire life. It involves soldier in an unmarked grave.
R.C. Durkee Great question. Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. Opposites attracting does not apply with this couple as they are "cut from the same cloth." Both are pig-headed, feisty and unyielding with tempers as hot as Georgia in July. I love the dynamic (dynamite?) tension between them, and the suspense of wondering if they will realize their love for one another.
Thanks for asking!
R.C. Durkee For Rum Run, old newspaper articles, handed down stories. I had a relative who worked on the lake during Prohibition and I thought, "what if...?"
R.C. Durkee I see or hear a situation and I think, what if...?
R.C. Durkee This will sound cliché, but write what you love or what interests you- your words will reflect the energy of your passion and the reader will feel it. Also write for yourself first without worrying about acceptance. Just get the words down and perfect it later.
R.C. Durkee Independence. No "set in stone" schedule.
R.C. Durkee Fortunately, I have never had writer's block. I am not intimidated by a blank sheet of paper or screen. I think it's because I don't write on a schedule and therefore, I am in the mindset to write when I do. Then the words just flow.
R.C. Durkee I am currently working on a Civil War novel. It will be story within a story separated by 120 years.
