Rachael Ball I'm reading Paul Mason's 'Post Capitalism, A Guide to our Future', 'Hallelujah Anyway' by Anne Lamott and 'We are all completely beside ourselves' by Karen Joy Fowler. Also 2 graphic novels- 'Threads' by the wonderful Kate Evans about the Calais refugees and 'The Bad Doctor' by Ian Williams (Sorry Ian really should have read this ages ago! Its brilliant!
Rachael Ball Have several projects on the go at the same time. You can leap frog from one to another when one is becoming tricky. Also moving is good if your brain is going stagnant. Get out and about and take a note book with you.
Rachael Ball Being fulfilled creatively.
Rachael Ball What worked well for me was blogging episodes of 'The Inflatable Woman.' It's a great motivator if you tell yourself that you have to update your blog on a regular date. And the fact you are actually 'publishing' something makes you really hone your work well. Also get in touch with your instincts. They are your compass. there should be a sense of excitement or uniqueness when you are writing something worthwhile I think.
Rachael Ball I'm working on a story called the 'Wolf Man.' I have just received an Arts Council grant to finish it so I#m very lucky and very pleased!!
Rachael Ball Being a cartoonist I use a mixture of visual doodles and hand written notes to come up with ideas. I have note books all over the place to scribble down thoughts, inspirations or really great conversations I've overheard. I think the journey from inspiration to actual writing goes through several stages. Starts with scribbling. Then I do collecting and putting different ideas together. Then selecting and chucking ideas out. Then the heavy work starts of planning plots and thinking 'Is there actually a point to doing this?' If there is then I would spend quite a while devising characters personalities and structuring the plot before actually scripting.
Rachael Ball The Inflatable Woman was based on my experiences after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. The book is semi autobiographical as there is a lot of fictional additions in there too.
