Ian Rankin's Siobhan Clarke and John Rebus. She is a perfect foil for his cutting-corners, free spirit. She gets irritated by his unorthodox methods, by contrast sticking to agreed police procedure and embracing new police techniques. Better yet, I suspect she's bored with his music obsession. Nonetheless, there is mutual respect there, and even a degree of affection.

I feel very strongly about the natural world and the perils it suffers at the hands of human greed and selfishness - or maybe just indifference. Having trained as a zoologist and comparative psychologist, I'm only too well aware that we underestimate non-human animals' capacity to experience suffering. Civilisations will be judged by the way they treat animals, and we are on the brink of the 6th extinction!
