(1) When I start developing a story, the last thing I do before falling asleep is to tell myself the story from beginning to end, or as far as I have gotten in my outline. If I add new details along the way, I start over from the beginning, so i can make sure I incorporate them into my mental picture. This helps prime me for my next writing or outlining session; I am essentially capturing in words the story I told myself the night before. (2) Since my day job is a professional creative director and copywriter, I am used to producing on a deadline. Setting a deadline for my fiction work keeps delays -- and writer's block -- to a minimum; I just don't give myself the choice to not produce, even if what I produce is terrible. I'll just write whatever works at the time and know that I can fix/edit it in the next draft. However, having a tight outline by using #1 helps keep the crap to a minimum. (3) If 1 & 2 fail, I pick a book out of my physical library, open to a random page, and type a few pages until my own story begs me to stop wasting time.(less)
