I grew up in the Midwest in a first-generation Italian family. We lived with my grandparents since in an Italian family when the oldest girl gets married, she doesn’t move out, her husband moves in. I was the eldest of five children which caused the usual sibling problems—fighting, borrowing stuff, and eating really, really fast or you were out of luck. Our grandparents spoke to us in Italian, and we answered in English (so we wouldn’t get kicked out of kindergarten like my mother did for not knowing English).

I went to an all-girl Catholic high school (yes, with the plaid skirt/blazer/knee-high socks) and on to an all-girl college where I rebelled by wearing slacks in the library instead of a skirt. I majored in math until I switched to Eng

I work from plotting cards and if I try to write and nothing works, I get up and do something else while the story simmers in my brain. Usually, I can come back to the computer with fresh eyes, and the words start to flow again. I used to write in the lower level of my home, a completely furnished, comfortable room, but with little natural light. Then my son bought me a laptop and wireless modem. I switched to writing at my dining room table so I could look out at the woods behind my home. Much more inspiring—so much so, that I’m adding on a room where I can write and look out at the view of deer, bunny rabbits, and butterflies.(less)

I find I have to get out of the house to recharge. Writing is a solitary occupation. Some days I can feel that the well is dry and needs filling up. Just sitting in front of the computer doesn't do it for me. I do something I like—go to the library, drive through for fast food and listen to the radio, walk in the park, sit by a lake, book a facial. Sometimes I need other people so I lunch with a friend, go to the mall, phone someone I've been trying to find time to call. De-stress, unwind, take a breath. Soon enough the ideas start flowing again.(less)

Thankful. Grateful. Blessed.

Thanksgiving is more than just a meal. It is a rare chance to be together, friends and family, under one roof to celebrate the goodness in our lives. The time spent together shopping, hours of prep work, cooking, baking, and eating erases the miles between us and the time spent apart. It’s a meal of old family recipes and new ones from the younger crowd. A celebration of laughter and sharing joys
