First I get away from my computer (going outside, weather permitting) to clean out some of the clutter from my brain. Then I come back with fresher eyes and negotiate with myself about the writing process. I make myself commit to doing a certain amount of writing before I move on to other things. This keeps me from falling into the trap of saying “oh, I’ll just check my e-mails” or “I’ll watch one more episode” and getting stuck wasting time. It makes me more motivated to power through. I also sometimes make playlists that relate to my stories to get me in a writing mood.(less)

Ideas are always popping into my head (which is why I always have pen and paper within easy reach to jot them down), and different people or scenes that I see often strike me as interesting. My problem is weeding through the bad ideas and sticking with one or two projects at a time without letting myself get distracted by anything else. I do keep these spare ideas written down, and I have to promise myself I won’t touch them until I’ve finished with whatever I’m working on currently.(less)
