I visited Japan in October of 2017 and the country, culture, and people captured my heart. The desire to return burns brightly.

About that time I watched a video of a former yakuza (a Japanese mobster) starting his life over and opening an udon noodle restaurant with his friends. It showed how hard it is to not go back to criminal life and to fit into regular society again. That was also the time One Ok Rock's song 'Stand Out Fit In' came out. The song really moved me. I remembered all too well what it was like not fitting in as a kid. Click! I had the basis for a story. Mix that with my love of the kitsune (mythological Japanese fox) and wah-lah!

I started planning and writing on Dec 1, 2018, while I was on the plane to take the lowest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. (Think very basic conversation.) It really helped me fend off the nervous jitters!(less)
