Born in late 1954 in Easthampton, New York, Alan Loewen is the product of a long line of German Mennonite farmers on his father's side and a long line of Episcopalian whalers and fishermen on his mother's side.

In his early years, Loewen became an avid reader, devouring fantasy and science fiction as fast he could read. His favorite novels to this day will always be H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds along with Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Loewen knows that his writing did not originate in a vacuum and acknowledges he stands on the shoulders of giants who have inspired him over the years: C. S. Lewis, H. P. Lovecraft, Alan Garner, Robert Holdstock, and many others.

Loewen also makes no bones about his writing: he writes solel

Currently, I am working on a series of short stories that together comprise what is called a "braided novel."

The Shrine War has already been published in Fred Patten's anthology, Dogs of War. I am currently writing a short story that runs concurrently with The Shrine Wars entitled, The Inugami. It will be all wrapped hope in a much lighter humor piece with the working title, Hoso's First Day.

The series was inspired by my love of the Far East especially China and Japan. Everything fascinates me: the architecture, their history, their religion and their mythology. The three stories all deal with with my favorite yōkai (loosely defined as fabulous creatures) that are the kitsune (fox spirits) and the Inugami (dog gods). Needless to say, I have taken great liberties with their mythology.(less)

Fascinated by AI, I have been chatting with ChatGPT since its inception (Note: I do NOT use AI in any of my writing ... that's deception). I use it to search the web and compile news reports on topics that interest me, such as Biblical archaeology, artificial intelligence, and other subjects.
I am also a confirmed Japanophile and someday hope to complete my novel, The Shrine War, a love letter Read more of this blog post »

… oh. Wait a sec. (I can’t comment anymore without giving spoilers).

The story is painfully simple. A family flees Atlanta that is under siege by trillions of man-eating insects.

The story was rushed into print too q

Though it could have used the services of an editor, Nightcrawlers was an enjoyable read, reminding me much of the pulp SF from the 30s and 40s.
