Born in 1954 in Easthampton, New York, Alan Loewen descends from a long line of German Mennonite farmers on his father’s side and Episcopalian whalers and fishermen on his mother’s. That unusual heritage—part rural simplicity, part saltwater folklore—still echoes through his fiction today.

An avid reader from childhood, Loewen devoured fantasy, science fiction, mythology, and strange tales at every opportunity. Among the works that most deeply shaped his imagination are H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds, Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the writings of C. S. Lewis, H. P. Lovecraft, Alan Garner, and Robert Holdstock.

At heart, Loewen considers himself first and foremost a storyteller. His goal is not to lecture, preach, o

Currently, I am working on a series of short stories that together comprise what is called a "braided novel."

The Shrine War has already been published in Fred Patten's anthology, Dogs of War. I am currently writing a short story that runs concurrently with The Shrine Wars entitled, The Inugami. It will be all wrapped hope in a much lighter humor piece with the working title, Hoso's First Day.

The series was inspired by my love of the Far East especially China and Japan. Everything fascinates me: the architecture, their history, their religion and their mythology. The three stories all deal with with my favorite yōkai (loosely defined as fabulous creatures) that are the kitsune (fox spirits) and the Inugami (dog gods). Needless to say, I have taken great liberties with their mythology.(less)

New Logo!

I have a love/hate with artificial intelligence. There is so much of what is called AI slop out there, that I long for true human interaction and real books written by real people.
And by the bye, I want to assure you that I never use AI in my writing. Every word in my pages is 100% me, errors and all.
However, I have found a use for AI when it comes to creating a new logo.
Here is my old boring Face Read more of this blog post »
