I'm on Goodreads a lot as a reader-- my author bio has always been a copy-paste of my Wikipedia. (It's out November 3, and available now on NetGalley.)

Growing up in a single-parent home in Rhode Island, I was often in my mother's Toyota Corolla as she juggled work with bank and grocery errands, plus three kids' dentist appointments and after-school activities. A lot of car time! Her go-to calm was music, so her glove box stacked with cassette tapes, including Dan Fogelberg's The Innocent Age. There was this one particular song about an old romance meetup-- years later in a grocery story on

Adele Griffin I think I’d just have to go down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass to Wonderland. Scared but curious!

It really shook up my process and I'd do it again. Generally, all I like to know when I start is my ending. Or at least have a few "sliding door" options on endings.

And I like to save room for surprising myself.(less)

Pool House by Mary H.K. Choi
"Wow, this was a surprising reading experience! This is clearly a writer that loves language. She packs every sentence, from the very first page, with interesting words and phrases. The feeling reminds me of a lettuce wrap at Korean barbecue—you bite " Read more of this review »

“It's strange how so much life can be lived without speaking”
Adele Griffin, Where I Want to Be

“Fears are to be faced, not denied, and life is to be lived, not mourned.”
Adele Griffin, Where I Want to Be

“Aunt Clara doesn't take her eyes off her toast. Her delicate jet earrings tremble as her knife scratches at the toast like a cat's paw, buttering every inch. Strange how even the most mundane habits of dislikable people can strike such harsh chords. I even hate the way Aunt butters.”
Adele Griffin, Picture the Dead

Topics Mentioning This Author

“We are all refugees from our childhoods. And so we turn, among other things, to stories. To write a story, to read a story, is to be a refugee from the state of refugees. Writers and readers seek a solution to the problem that time passes, that those who have gone are gone and those who will go, which is to say every one of us, will go. For there was a moment when anything was possible. And there will be a moment when nothing is possible. But in between we can create.”
Mohsin Hamid, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia

“Our wedding programs included the Yeats quote, “Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.”
