I don’t quite know what to say about this book. I feel a lot of different things. There are many conflicting emotions going on in my head. On one hand, I loved getting to go back to the world I love so dearly and miss so often. I really enjoyed getting to have a new perspective on that world and getting so see how so many of the details from the original trilogy originated. However, I hate Coriolanus Snow, and I couldn’t make myself invest in his story.

I think reading this book after having read the others was a disservice to it. At that point, you’ve already gone three books hating the narrator of this one. It really makes it difficult to both get into the story and merge the two different Coriolanus Snows you are presented. The whole time I was reading, I couldn’t quite understand how he went from the boy we see in this book to the awful tyrant in the trilogy. I think the epilogue shed a lot of light onto that, and for that I applaud Suzanne Collins, but for most of the book I just couldn’t get over how different he seemed. I think if I had read this book before reading the original trilogy, I may have enjoyed it more (it is a prequel after all). It’s just hard to learn sympathy for a character you’ve hated for 10 years.

One thing I did enjoy was Lucy Gray. She was so unlike any character I have ever read, and definitely unlike any other character in this series. She was fiery and fierce and unwilling to compromise on what she knew to be right, but also managed to be sympathetic and understanding (softer than Katniss). I love how Suzanne Collins introduced singing into the book and the meaning of songs. Reading the lyrics always made me super happy and was definitely a really positive part of the book for me.

I do think the book went on a while more than it needed to. It just seemed like there were a couple story lines that I honestly didn’t think were necessary, but that’s just my opinion. I absolutely loved the whole time that Lucy was in the Hunger Games. It made me feel as if I had finally come home to the series of my childhood. That was this book’s redeeming quality. It didn’t feel as fast paced and interesting to me as the other books, and that’s why I gave it the rating I did. I still enjoyed it! Just not to the same amount as the others. ...more "
